Maharashtra girls' team wins gold in National School Chess Championship

Kolhapur, Dec 9 (UNI) The second-seeded Maharashtra team won the gold medal in the girls' category of the National School Chess Championship for Boys and Girls under 19 years organized by the Indian School Sports Federation at Greenwood High International, School, Bangalore, by winning six out of six matches and remaining undefeated.
In a press release here, Bharat Chaugule, president of Chess Association Kolhapur, said that Divya Patil of Kolhapur won the individual gold medal by scoring five and a half points out of six while playing on the third board and played a major role in bringing the gold medal to Maharashtra.
The winning Maharashtra team for the girls included Divya Patil, Shravani Undale and Anushka Kutwal, both from Pune, Shruti Kale from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Devanshi Gawande from Akola.

Melbourne, Jan. 18 (UNI) World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus made her first step towards a fifth grand slam title with a comfortable victory over French wildcard Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah on Sunday's first day of the Australian Open.
Opening the night session on Rod Laver Arena, Sabalenka hit 23 winners to eventually run away with a 6-4, 6-1 victory in one hour and 16 minutes, having initially encountered problems against the left-handed 20-year-old.
