Ex-IPS officers say govt ignored police warnings in letter to CM

Bengaluru, June 9 (UNI) In a scathing open letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, 30 retired senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers have accused the Karnataka government of scapegoating police officials in the aftermath of the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium that claimed 11 lives on June 4.
The letter reveals that police officers, from the local SHO to the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, had formally warned the government and event organisers against holding hurried celebrations immediately after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory, citing lack of adequate time for crowd management and public safety measures.
Despite these written warnings, the government and organisers disregarded the police advice and pushed ahead with the events, which drew crowds of about three lakh people at a venue with a seating capacity of only 35,000. This gross overcrowding directly contributed to the fatal stampede.
