Bengaluru, May 6 (UNI) Karnataka BJP chief Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Tuesday welcomed the Narendra Modi-led Central government’s decision to conduct a caste census, while launching a scathing attack on the Congress government in Karnataka for allegedly using an outdated report "to divide communities for political gain".
Addressing the media after a meeting of BJP leaders from backward classes, Vijayendra said the party supports the Centre’s move and urged the Siddaramaiah government to refrain from proceeding with the 10-year-old Kantharaj Commission report, which he described as unscientific and outdated.
"The state government does not have the authority to conduct a caste census. Former CM Veerappa Moily himself admitted that the Kantharaj report is outdated and not suitable for implementation. Now that the Centre has taken a firm decision, the state should wait for the national caste census and act accordingly," he said.
