NRN's work culture debate resurfaces as K'taka proposes 14-hour workday

Bengaluru, July 21 (UNI) Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy ignited a firestorm last year when he suggested that India's work culture needed a radical overhaul, advocating for a 70-hour work week. Now, this contentious debate has reached new heights as the Karnataka state government considers extending IT employees' working hours to an astonishing 14 hours per day, according to the Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU).
KITU revealed on Saturday that this proposal to amend the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act was discussed in a high-stakes meeting convened by the labour department with various industry stakeholders. If implemented, the proposed extension—totaling a grueling 70 hours a week—would primarily impact Bengaluru, India's bustling IT hub and state capital.
Despite the mounting controversy, the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led government has maintained an eerie silence on the issue.
