India accounts around 18k to 20k rabies-related deaths every year

Kochi, May 13 (UNI) India accounts for around 18,000 to 20,000 rabies-related deaths every year, according to the Kerala Government Medical Officers' Association (KGMOA).
The increasing number of rabies-related deaths in Kerala has also emerged as a serious public health challenge, underscoring the urgent need for proactive and preventive measures.
In view of the alarming situation in Kerala, the Association calls for the initiation and institutionalization of a universal pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) rabies vaccination programme, with a particular focus on children and other high-risk groups.
