Channapatna (Karnataka), Oct 31 (UNI) Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy has expressed grave concern regarding the Karnataka government's plan to phase out its five guarantee schemes.
Speaking to reporters during a campaign event in the Channapatna Assembly constituency on Thursday, Kumaraswamy declared, "This is the first stage. It sends a clear message that they are preparing a platform to remove all five guarantees in the state one after the other."
He specifically questioned the feasibility of maintaining the Shakti free travel scheme for women, asserting that it is unrealistic for anyone to claim they face no financial issues while advocating for its termination.
Kumaraswamy argued that such claims contradict the reality of economic challenges faced by many citizens.
The Union Minister also scrutinised the government's management of welfare schemes, particularly the Anna Bhagya scheme, which provides 10 kg of free rice per member of a Below Poverty Line (BPL) family.
Kumaraswamy highlighted alarming figures, stating that thousands of BPL cards are being revoked across taluks, with a total of 20 lakh cards cancelled statewide. "This is indicative of the government’s intent to withdraw guarantees sequentially," he claimed, attributing the state’s financial difficulties to poor governance rather than a lack of resources.
The Minister's comments reflect growing apprehension among the public about the sustainability of welfare schemes in Karnataka. He reiterated his stance that the current administration's mismanagement has led to a financial crunch, undermining the welfare of its citizens.
When addressing the upcoming Channapatna bypolls, Kumaraswamy noted the cooperation of BJP leaders, stating, "BJP leaders have taken up responsibilities with love and resolve to win the Channapatna seat.
There is no pressure on them." He asserted that the alliance between the BJP and his Janata Dal (Secular) party remains strong, despite previous setbacks.
The former Chief Minister concluded by predicting the downfall of the Congress government, claiming, "The state government is going to fall on its own after the bypoll results are announced," as he emphasised the need for responsible governance in Karnataka.
