Debutant TVK's Vijay takes TN poll scene by storm, emerges single largest party, outcome throws up hung Assembly for the first time in 2 decades

Chennai, May 4 (UNI) For the first time in two decades, the Tamil Nadu election results has thrown up a fractured mandate, resulting in a hung Assembly, as none of the three leading players failing to get a majority on their own with the nascent Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) of actor-politician Vijay taking the poll scene by storm, emerging as the single largest party in its maiden foray, but fell short of a simple majority as counting of votes polled in the April 23 elections was taken up on Monday.
As per the latest trends, Vijay proved all the post poll predictions wrong, cashed in on the anti-incumbency factor, caused major dent in the vote base of both the ruling DMK and the Opposition AIADMK, winning 105 seats and leading in two more--taking its tally to 107 in the 234-member House.
Earlier the state witnessed a similar situation in 2006, when DMK headed by M Karunanidhi emerged as single largest party with 90-plus votes, but lacked the majoirty. However, with the outside support of allies Congress, PMK and others, he successfully completed the five-year term unmidnful of the then Opposition leader J Jayalaltihaaa of AIADMK branding it as a minority government.
