India unfazed by nuclear threats, ready for post-strike ops: CDS General Anil Chauhan

Bengaluru, Apr 9 (UNI) Declaring a decisive shift in India’s strategic posture, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Thursday asserted that the country will not bow to nuclear blackmail and is prepared to continue conventional military operations even under a nuclear shadow.
Framing it as a “new normal” in India’s approach, General Chauhan said the nation’s resolve has been clearly articulated at the highest level, recalling remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Operation Sindoor that India would not be deterred by nuclear threats. “We must be prepared to operate even in a post-strike environment. The linkage between conventional and nuclear domains is now firmly established,” he said.
Emphasising that nuclear weapons remain instruments of deterrence rather than warfighting, the CDS explained that their real impact lies in the cognitive space. “Deterrence is a mind game. Nuclear weapons do not form a domain by themselves but are part of the cognitive domain, influencing decisions and behaviour,” he noted, while acknowledging their significant effect on conventional military planning.
