No hike in GST on cement; Himachal CM accuses BJP of diversionary tactics

Shimla, Oct 2 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today dismissed allegations of any hike in GST on cement, accusing the BJP of misleading the people and indulging in diversionary tactics to avoid answering when the Centre would release the ₹1,500 crore in disaster relief to the state.
The Chief Minister clarified that his government had, in fact, reduced the price of cement after coming to power. “When we took charge, the price of cement was ₹425 per bag. We brought it down by ₹25 to ₹400 per bag. The state has not levied any tax on cement as alleged by BJP leaders,” he said.
He pointed out that after the implementation of GST in 2017, Himachal Pradesh lost nearly ₹4,000 crore in revenue earlier being collected through excise duty and VAT on industries. “This collection has now come down to only ₹150 crore. The Centre stopped the GST deficit grant in June 2022, further squeezing the state’s financial resources,” he added.
