HC sentences man for second marriage during appeal by first wife

Chandigarh, Dec 5 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sentenced a man to three months’ simple imprisonment for entering into a second marriage while his first wife’s appeal against their divorce was still under judicial consideration.
The punishment, which also includes a fine of ₹2,000, was delivered by Justice Alka Sarin in a contempt petition moved by the woman.
The court held that the husband had deliberately violated Section 15 of the Hindu Marriage Act, which clearly prohibits remarriage when a divorce decree is under challenge within the statutory period. The judge rejected the man’s apology, emphasising that defying a stay order and undermining the appellate process amounts to civil contempt.
