Solar irrigation schemes transform farming landscape, strengthen farmers’ economy in Himachal Pradesh

Dharamshala, Jan 11 ( UNI) Farming in Himachal Pradesh, a predominantly hill state, has traditionally faced major irrigation challenges due to difficult terrain and dependence on rainfall. However, with the continuous expansion of irrigation facilities by the state government, the agricultural landscape is witnessing a positive transformation, significantly strengthening farmers’ livelihoods.
To reduce dependence on rain-fed farming, the government is promoting water conservation tanks, lift irrigation, traditional kuhls, sprinklers and drip irrigation systems. Along with these, solar-powered irrigation schemes have emerged as a game changer, especially for remote and high-altitude areas. These initiatives have expanded the irrigated area and helped increase farmers’ income.
Underlining the importance of irrigation, Deputy Director of Agriculture Kuldeep Dhiman said irrigation is not merely a facility but the backbone of agricultural development. He said timely and adequate irrigation plays a crucial role in crop quality, productivity and farm income, particularly in vegetable cultivation, which is highly sensitive to water availability.
