New Delhi, June 3 (UNI): The death toll in the devastating fire at Hotel Lemon in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar has risen to 21, while 37 people, including several foreign nationals, were rescued in a large-scale emergency operation, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The incident has triggered a major investigation into possible fire and building safety violations at the property.
According to preliminary findings, most of those killed are believed to be African nationals staying at the hotel at the time of the incident.
The tragedy has triggered serious questions over alleged violations of building and fire safety norms. Sources said the establishment had permission to operate only six rooms, but was allegedly accommodating around 40 guests and operating nearly 25 rooms at the time of the fire.
Officials are also examining allegations that the hotel had narrow windows, inadequate emergency exits and a common entry-exit point, all of which may have hampered evacuation efforts during the blaze.
Rescue teams, including personnel from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and local residents, carried out a massive operation to evacuate those trapped inside. Several occupants reportedly jumped from upper floors in a desperate attempt to escape the flames.
The incident falls under the jurisdiction of Saket Police Station, and multiple agencies have launched investigations into the cause of the fire and possible violations by the hotel management.
Meanwhile, the Central Government has announced ex-gratia compensation for the victims of the tragedy. According to the Prime Minister's Office, the next of kin of each deceased victim will receive ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF), while those injured will be provided ₹50,000.
Expressing grief over the loss of lives, the Prime Minister conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Authorities have been directed to provide all possible assistance to those affected.
Investigations are underway, and further details are awaited.
