New Delhi, May 24 (UNI) The Delhi High Court on Monday deferred till July 6 the plea seeking recognition of same-sex marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act and Foreign Marriage Act.
The Centre submitted before the Court that the country is dealing with coronavirus pandemic at present, there are other urgent matters which need consideration and 'nobody is dying because they don't have a marriage certificate', Live law reported.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre contended, 'As a government, our focus in terms of urgency is on urgent, imminent issues and that law officers are also dealing with pandemic-related cases.'
Senior Advocate Saurabh Kirpal, representing some of the petitioners, told the court that the government is supposed to be neutral and the court has to determine urgency.
After hearing the arguments, the court listed the matter for hearing on July 6.
