Shahid Kapoor to star in Indian adaptation of Italian sci-fi romcom 'Husband & Wife'

Mumbai, May 7 (UNI): Shahid Kapoor is set to collaborate with filmmaker Amit Sharma on a new romantic comedy that is now understood to be an Indian adaptation of the 2017 Italian sci-fi comedy "Husband & Wife".
Originally titled "Moglie e marito", the Italian sci-fi comedy follows a married couple on the brink of divorce who unexpectedly swap bodies following a failed scientific experiment. This forces them to live each other's daily routines, leading to comedic elements and a deeper understanding of one another.
Directed by Simone Godano and starring Pierfrancesco Favino and Kasia Smutniak in lead roles, the original film received a positive response at the box office, earning $2.84 million worldwide, reports Variety India.
Sharma, known for films like "Badhaai Ho" and "Maidaan", has reportedly adapted the concept into a more rooted Indian comedy-drama filled with wit, warmth, and emotional depth. The project is said to carry tonal similarities to Shahid Kapoor's 2024 sci-fi romantic comedy "Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya", which explored an unconventional romance between a human and a robot. Interestingly, this new venture emerges just as Maddock Films is already developing a "TBMAUJ" sequel.
While Shahid has officially joined the film, the female lead is yet to be locked. Rashmika Mandanna was reportedly the initial choice for the role, though scheduling conflicts prevented the collaboration from materialising. Producers are currently in discussions with his "Kabir Singh" co-star Kiara Advani and Janhvi Kapoor, who would be a first-time pairing, for the lead role. The untitled film, produced by Sunir Kheterpal's The Vermilion World and Jio Studios, is expected to go on floors in late 2026, targeting a mid-2027 theatrical debut.
Meanwhile, Shahid is filming for Raj & DK's second season of Prime Video India's "Farzi". The actor returns to reprise the role of Sunny for the new chapter of the black comedy thriller series, along with Vijay Sethupathi, Kay Kay Menon, Raashii Khanna, and Bhuvan Arora, among others. Up next, he will be seen in Homi Adajania's "Cocktail 2", co-starring Mandanna and Kriti Sanon. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on June 21, 2026.
