Neo-Soul icon D’Angelo dies at 51 after fight with pancreatic cancer

Washington, Oct 15 (UNI) Neo-soul pioneer and Brown Sugar hitmaker D’Angelo has died at the age of 51, following a battle with pancreatic cancer, a source confirmed to People.
The Grammy-winning artist, born Michael Eugene Archer, had reportedly been hospitalized for several months and spent his final two weeks in hospice care.
TMZ also confirmed the news, reporting that the acclaimed singer passed away after quietly fighting the disease.
D’Angelo rose to fame in the mid-1990s with his soulful voice and innovative sound, helping to define the neo-soul genre. He is best remembered for his signature hits Brown Sugar and Untitled (How Does It Feel), which showcased both his vocal range and musical depth.
Tributes poured in across social media, including from longtime collaborator DJ Premier, who worked with D’Angelo on the 1998 track Devil’s Pie.
“Such a sad loss to the passing of D’Angelo. We had so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep peacefully D’. Love you, KING,” he wrote on X.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo was the son of a Pentecostal minister and began playing piano at just 3 years old. By the age of 5, he was already performing alongside his father in church.
He later played at his grandfather’s church and, as a teenager, formed several music groups, including Three of a Kind and Michael Archer and Precise, showcasing his early talent at local talent shows.
His 1995 debut album Brown Sugar peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and went platinum within a year. It earned four Grammy nominations and positioned him as a major voice in contemporary R&B.
His 2000 follow-up, Voodoo, debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B Albums chart. The album won the Grammy for Best R&B Album, while the sensual ballad Untitled (How Does It Feel) earned him Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and a nomination for Best R&B Song.
Throughout his career, D’Angelo collaborated with some of the most influential artists in hip-hop and R&B, including Questlove, Lauryn Hill, Common, Q-Tip, J Dilla, Raphael Saadiq, Angie Stone, and most recently Jay-Z in 2024.
