'Before gold, there was blood': Mohanlal stars in ‘Khalifa – The Bloodline’

New Delhi, Dec 8 (UNI) Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal, often hailed by fans as the “complete actor,” is set to portray Prithviraj Sukumaran’s grandfather, Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali, in the upcoming action thriller ‘Khalifa – The Bloodline’.
The film, planned as a two-part saga, promises a violent, gripping narrative exploring the Mambarakkal family’s underworld dominance. The first installment, ‘The Intro’, will reveal the character’s bloody origins, while the sequel will focus on his reign.
The announcement came via a newly released poster, which, though not showing Mohanlal’s face, confirmed his pivotal role in the film. This revelation has sparked significant excitement among the Malayalam film industry and audiences eagerly anticipating the Mohanlal-Prithviraj reunion.
The two-part series is structured to deepen the story of the Mambarakkal empire. ‘The Intro’ chronicles the family’s violent rise, while the second part explores Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali’s reign and consolidation of power.
The poster features symbolic imagery — a bloodstained hand holding a cigar, stacked gold bars, and a revolver—signaling the intensity and dark tone of the narrative.
Both Mohanlal and Prithviraj shared the poster on Instagram, captioning it:
"Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali! Meet the legend in Part 1. Know his bloody history in Part 2. Khalifa Part 1 – In cinemas Onam 2026. Vengeance will be written in GOLD… But before GOLD, there was BLOOD."
The tagline “Before gold, there was blood” emphasizes the film’s central theme: the violent origins of the Mambarakkal family’s rise before their involvement in gold smuggling.
A recently released teaser provides additional context, showing police and customs agencies tracking gold smuggling operations across Kerala, Nepal, the Middle East, and London.
The character Hamsa, played by Indrans, warns authorities about potential threats to Aamir Ali (Prithviraj) if he enters India due to the COFEPOSA Act. The teaser also highlights the formidable legacy of both Aamir and his grandfather, Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali.
The action sequences to recall Prithviraj’s earlier film Ranam, promising intense and stylized fight choreography. The narrative’s global smuggling network underscores the scale and ambition of the storyline.
Mohanlal will be central to ‘Khalifa: Part 1 – The Intro,’ establishing the underworld roots of the Mambarakkal family. The film marks a reunion for Mohanlal and Prithviraj, who last collaborated on L2: Empuraan.
