Cannes bans nudity and excessively voluminous outfits on Red Carpet

Cannes, May 14 (UNI) As the 78th Cannes Film Festival unfurls its famed crimson carpet, organisers have codified new sartorial regulations, firmly prohibiting full nudity and garments deemed "excessively voluminous".
The updated policy aims to maintain decorum and ensure the smooth flow of events at the Palais.
The updated guidelines, officially released on May 12, emphasise alignment with both the institutional ethos of the festival and the framework of French law.
“This year, the Cannes Film Festival has made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect. The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law,” said the new instructions from the festival.
The decision follows headline-making moments such as a topless protestor appearing on the Cannes red carpet in 2022 and Bianca Censori's barely-there outfit at this year's Grammy's, both of which sparked debates about limits and decorum at major cultural events.
The new restrictions have already influenced fashion choices. Academy Award-winning actress and jury member Halle Berry was among the first to acknowledge the impact of the policy. “I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” Berry said regarding her look for tonight’s opening night gala. “I’m not going to break the rules. The nudity part is also probably a good rule,” she mentioned at the press conference.
Cannes has long faced criticism over its red carpet dress rules, especially those as unfair to women. While the festival has softened its once-rigid high heel mandate, now permitting modest heels, though sneakers remain taboo, it continues to draw scrutiny. In 2022, controversy erupted when an indigenous producer was denied entry for wearing traditional moccasins.
The evening welcomed the nine distinguished members of this year’s Feature Film Jury, Halle Berry, Payal Kapadia, Alba Rohrwacher, Leïla Slimani, Dieudo Hamadi, Hong Sangsoo, Carlos Reygadas, and Jeremy Strong - led by their president, Juliette Binoche.
