EC to deploy nearly 2,000 more micro-observers for voter list hearings in Bengal

Kolkata, Jan 12 (UNI): In a bid to speed up the hearing process under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to appoint nearly 2,000 additional micro-observers in West Bengal. As in the earlier phase, only Central government employees will be deployed as micro-observers, not state government staff, Commission sources said.
According to officials, training for the newly appointed micro-observers will be held on Thursday. The decision comes amid mounting pressure to complete hearings involving a massive number of voters within a limited timeframe. Earlier the EC had initially appointed around 4,600 micro-observers before the hearing process began.
However, with the workload increasing, the Commission has now decided to induct close to 2,000 more to accelerate the proceedings. Commission sources said that about 94 lakh names feature in the list of “logical discrepancies”, while another 32 lakhs fall under the “no mapping” category.
