Mizoram records highest drug-related deaths in 20 years

Aizawl, Jan 9(UNI): At least 118 people died in Mizoram due to drug abuse during 2025, the highest number of drug-related deaths recorded in the state in the past two decades, according to data maintained by the state Excise & Narcotics Department and the Police.
Officials said the victims included 100 males and 18 females, aged between 14 and 57 years. A majority of the deaths were attributed to the consumption of mixed drugs, while around 40 persons lost their lives due to heroin abuse alone.
The alarming figures were highlighted during a case review meeting of the Excise & Narcotics Department held in Aizawl on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Commissioner of Excise & Narcotics Z. Lalhmangaiha and attended by senior department officials, Assistant Commissioners of Excise & Narcotics from various districts, and officers-in-charge.
