Bengal: Durgapur East BJP MLA's 'encounter' remark in gang rape case sparks stir

Asansol, June 8 (UNI) The statement of Durgapur East BJP MLA, Chandrasekhar Banerjee, to kill those accused of Sunday’s gang rape incident in a hotel in West Bengal's Durgapur district, through police encounters, has triggered a political row. The legislator has also urged the state's home minister and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, to consider his proposal.
The four accused were produced in a court on Monday amidst agitation and sloganering by BJP supporters. The Durgapur Court has sent them to five days' police custody.
While speaking to the local media, Banerjee, the newly elected MLA of Durgapur East, has said that the policy of the BJP government is not to waste time in trials through court and heinous criminals should be encountered hours after their arrests without wasting government money behind them by putting them behind bars, like what is being done in Yogi Adityanath’s Government in Uttar Pradesh.
