27.992 kg of elephant tusks seized in Assam

Shillong, May 30 (UNI) Sleuths from Customs (Preventive) Headquarters in Shillong seized 27.992 kg of elephant tusks (ivory) on May 29 and apprehended one person from Assam’s Biswanath Chariali, officials said on Thursday.
Acting on intelligence inputs, Customs officials rushed to Biswanath Chariali and, in a planned operation with Assam police, successfully intercepted a person and seized four cut pieces of tusks of an Indian (Asian) elephant (Elephas maximus) weighing 27.992 kg.
Elephant tusks are classified under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act (WLPA, 1972). The goods were seized under Section 50 of the WLPA, 1972 (as amended), and the case was handed over to the wildlife authorities.
