Over 1.29 lakh temporary ILPs issued in Mizoram in 2024

Aizawl, March 11(UNI) The Mizoram government issued at least 1,29,953 temporary Inner Line Permits (ILPs) in 2024, while no renewals were granted for temporary ILPs, Chief Minister Lalduhoma informed the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
The ILP system, governed by the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, mandates that non-tribal individuals from outside Mizoram obtain permits to enter the state. This colonial-era regulation remains in force in certain northeastern states, originally designated as 'excluded areas' by the British administration.
In response to a query from ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) legislator V. L. Vaithanzama, Lalduhoma stated that 7,927 regular ILPs were issued during the same period, with 5,675 holders opting for renewals. Additionally, the government granted 238 temporary stay ILPs and 18 permits valid for two years in 2024.
