Over 6 lakh affected by floods in Assam, 12 dead

Guwahati, June 4 (UNI) Floods have affected over 6 lakh people in 21 districts of Assam even as the flood-related death toll has reached 12, government sources said, adding over 1.66 lakh children are also affected by floods.
Incessant rains have also led to landslides in various parts of the state leading to the death of five people, including children, in the state capital Guwahati.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), surging waters have inundated 1,506 villages in 69 revenue circles in all of 21 districts. The flood waters have also affected 14739.39 hectares of agricultural land, some with standing crops.
The government has opened 511 relief camps and relief distribution centres to help the marooned people. A total of 39,746 people, including 8,269 children, have taken shelter in relief camps, government officials said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cabinet colleagues have been visiting flood-hit districts and the relief camps to take stock of the situation. The Chief Minister has asked the district administration to take up relief works as priority to help the marooned people.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called him up to enquire about the current flood situation in the state.
“I briefed him on how continuous rain in Assam and adjoining states has led to flooding and impacted many lives. I also apprised him of the relief operations under way. The PM expressed concern and assured me of his full support in terms of relief and rehabilitation efforts,” said Sarma on his X handle.
