Stock market extends gains for 2nd day; Sensex rallied 610 points

Mumbai/New Delhi, Mar 6 (UNI) India’s benchmark indices continued the positive momentum and ended on a strong note as the BSE Sensex on Thursday added another gain of about 610 points at 74,340.09 mainly due to cooling of crude and potential negotiations on US tariffs improved global sentiments and fueled this rebound.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) rose 207.40 points at 22,544.70.

The selling off by the Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued as they sold equities in the cash segment worth Rs 2895 crore while the Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought equities to the tune of Rs 3,370.6 crore in the trading session yesterday, according to data available.

Though oscillation was seen during the day, the equity market remained strong for another day. The Sensex opened firm at 74,308.30, up 578 points. It rose 660 points during intra-day to touch day’s high of 74,390.80, before closing at 73,340.09, advancing 609.86 points from its previous close.

The Nifty registered day’s high at 22,556.45 and low at 22,245.85 points. The Mid-cap and small-cap indices rose by 0.65 per cent and 1.65 per cent respectively.

The stocks that climbed were Energy by 2.78 per cent, Metal by 2.64 per cent, Oil and Gas by 2.36 per cent, and Commodities by 1.65 per cent. In the 30-scrip BSE Sensex, shares of 25 shares advanced and closed higher compared to their previous closing price, while shares of 5 companies declined and ended in red.

The gainers were Asian Paints by 4.70 per cent to Rs 2267.10, NTPC by 3.41 per cent to Rs 337.75, Reliance Industries by 2.96 per cent to Rs 1210.55 and Tata Steel by 2.87 per cent to Rs 150.35.

The losers during today’s trade were Tech Mahindra by 2.31 per cent to Rs 1503.60, Kotak Bank by 0.90 per cent to Rs 1921.60, Zomato by 0.62 per cent to Rs 225.40 and Tata Motors by 0.19 per cent to Rs 639.75.

Asian Market were seen as strong, as Strait Times was up by 0.48 per cent, Hang Seng by 3.18 per cent, Kospi by 0.70. per cent and Jakarta Composite by 1.41 per cent.
