Subhasis Sengupta assumes charge as Director (Operations) of RINL

Visakhapatnam, June 3 (UNI) Subhasis Sengupta, a seasoned steel industry professional with more than three decades of experience in steel production, maintenance, project execution and plant management, assumed charge as Director (Operations) of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), here on Wednesday.
Born on July 14, 1969, in Kolkata, Sengupta is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from The Bengal Engineering and Science University, West Bengal, and holds an M.Tech in Design and Production Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Durgapur, the steel plant said in a release here.
He began his career with Reliance Industries before joining Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) as a Management Trainee (Technical) in 1992.
Over the years, he has held several key positions across SAIL's operations and project divisions.
Prior to joining RINL, Sengupta served as Chief General Manager (Projects) at Durgapur Steel Plant, where he spearheaded major brownfield expansion projects valued at more than Rs 5,500 crore.
He was also associated with the proposed 3 MTPA greenfield expansion project estimated at Rs 28,000 crore.
Earlier, as Chief General Manager (Works) and Unit Head of SAIL Growth Works, he led a significant turnaround of the unit, resulting in a 51 per cent increase in production and a 108 per cent rise in turnover during his tenure.
He also implemented several initiatives that improved equipment reliability and operational efficiency.
As Director (Operations), Sengupta has outlined a vision to transform RINL into a leading steel producer through operational excellence, digital transformation and sustainable growth.
His immediate priorities include achieving full capacity utilisation, strengthening safety standards, ensuring raw material security, enhancing equipment reliability, optimising costs and advancing decarbonisation efforts.
He also plans to leverage emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve operational efficiency, predictive maintenance and decision-making processes. In addition, he intends to promote the adoption of global best practices through collaboration with leading steel producers.
With his extensive experience in steel plant operations, maintenance and project management, Sengupta is expected to play a key role in strengthening RINL's operational performance and supporting its long-term growth and sustainability objectives.
