NEET fiasco: Karnataka pushes states to conduct own entrance exams

Bengaluru, May 13 (UNI) Karnataka's political leadership on Wednesday intensified its attack on the union government following the cancellation of NEET UG-2026 amid reports of question paper leaks and irregularities, and demanded that states be allowed to conduct their own entrance examinations.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah termed the cancellation a "cruel betrayal of the youth", saying it had 'thrown' more than 22 lakh medical aspirants across the country into 'uncertainty.' He said lakhs of students, including over one lakh from Karnataka, were left distressed after months of preparation and significant financial expenditure by families on coaching, travel and related expenses.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar described the decision as a "huge disgrace", alleging that the sudden move had shaken student confidence and pushed aspirants back into uncertainty despite years of preparation. He also criticised BJP leaders for their silence on the issue and questioned former minister CN Ashwath Narayan for not responding.
