MoD seals Rs 661.50-crore deal for BrahMos Systems for Navy warships

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed a Rs 661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for procurement of BrahMos Fire Control Systems and launchers for Indian Navy ships, strengthening the maritime strike capabilities of frontline warships.

The contract, signed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, is aimed at equipping Indian Navy ships with advanced BrahMos weapon-system components. The project has a minimum indigenous content of 68 per cent and is expected to provide greater opportunities for Indian industries, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the Ministry said. It is also expected to generate employment over a period of three years and contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance indigenous defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported military technologies.

The BrahMos system fitted onboard various frontline Indian Navy warships serves as the Navy's primary surface-to-surface missile (SSM) system for maritime strike operations. The system is capable of engaging both land and sea targets at extended ranges with high precision and at supersonic speeds, providing the Navy with a significant stand-off strike capability. The latest procurement is part of the government's continuing push for indigenisation of advanced defence systems under the Indian-IDDM procurement category and is expected to further strengthen India's maritime security architecture and operational capabilities.
