HAL hands over Tejas, HTT-40 trainers to IAF; Dhruv-NG helicopters to Pawan Hans

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on Friday handed over two LCA Tejas Final Operational Clearance (FOC) twin-seat trainer aircraft and three HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft to the Indian Air Force, besides four Dhruv Next Generation (NG) helicopters to Pawan Hans Limited, in a major boost to India's indigenous military and civil aerospace programmes.

The platforms were handed over in Bengaluru in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, with Singh describing the occasion as an important step towards building domestic aerospace capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign platforms. "Our aim is to make India capable, self-reliant, and globally competitive in meeting its aerospace requirements," Singh said, stressing that indigenous aerospace capability was essential for achieving technological self-confidence and self-reliance. The Defence Minister said India's push for self-reliance in aerospace would have to be pursued as a gradual process involving aircraft design, avionics, propulsion, composite materials, flight-control systems, manufacturing and certification.

"There can be no sudden 'big bang' in the development of aerospace systems. It is a vast and gradual process involving a wide range of components," he said, adding that progress in the sector would require sustained efforts despite technological and industrial challenges. Singh also underlined the need to bring the defence and civil aviation sectors closer together, saying that capabilities developed for one segment could strengthen the wider aerospace ecosystem. He called for an integrated domestic ecosystem covering the entire value chain, from design and development to manufacturing, certification, lifecycle support and global marketing.

The Defence Minister said the changing character of warfare, increasingly driven by information and advanced technology, made indigenous development of complex aerospace systems particularly important. He described the LCA FOC trainer as a key platform for preparing IAF pilots for frontline fighter operations, while the Dhruv-NG represented the expansion of indigenous aerospace capability into the civil aviation segment. On the HTT-40, Singh said the aircraft would help end India's long-standing dependence on imported platforms for basic pilot training. He also expressed confidence that the indigenous trainer could find markets overseas.

The two Tejas twin-seat trainers handed over to the IAF are the final aircraft under the FOC contract. Designed to retain the core systems and combat capabilities of the frontline Tejas platform, the trainer is intended to provide pilots with a transition from basic and advanced training to frontline fighter operations. The HTT-40, designed and developed indigenously by HAL, is meant to meet the basic training requirements of the armed forces. The turboprop aircraft features a modern cockpit and avionics and can undertake aerobatics, general handling, instrument flying, navigation, night flying and formation flying.

The four Dhruv-NG helicopters handed over to Pawan Hans mark HAL's expansion into the civil and commercial rotary-wing market. The civil configuration incorporates modern avionics, enhanced systems and a more powerful engine, with the platform intended for applications such as passenger transport, emergency medical services and offshore logistics. Naidu said the certification and induction of the Dhruv-NG into civil operations represented an important development for India's indigenous civil aviation ecosystem and demonstrated the growing ability of domestic industry to develop aerospace platforms for commercial use.

Singh also urged HAL to expand its capabilities across the complete aerospace value chain and called for stronger cooperation between public-sector enterprises and private industry. "There is a need for enhanced public-private synergy to build next-gen indigenous aerospace capabilities," he said, calling for greater focus on artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, unmanned aerial systems, electronic warfare, cyber technologies and next-generation propulsion.

He further stressed the importance of realistic project timelines, warning that delays in technical programmes could create gaps in meeting critical defence requirements, raise costs and increase the risk of technologies becoming obsolete. Calling research and development a key priority, Singh urged young scientists, engineers, designers, test pilots and technicians to work on technologies that do not currently exist and help establish India as a leading aerospace technology hub over the coming decade.
