NASA bars Chinese nationals from its space program amid ongoing race of space dominance

New Delhi, Sep 13 (UNI) The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has barred Chinese Nationals on US visas from its facilities and internal networks, perceived as the US intention to have an upper hand in its ongoing space race with China.
The decision blocks Chinese students, researchers and contractors from accessing NASA facilities, networks, and materials.
Chinese nationals were denied access to critical research data and excluded from both in-person and virtual meetings, causing significant disruption in ongoing scientific research.
Earlier this month, Sean Duffy, NASA’s acting administrator, posted on X, “China is NOT going to the moon with good intentions. America will get there FIRST, preserving peace for both the US and our international partners.”
Sean Duffy is an American politician, former television presenter, lobbyist, attorney, and lumberjack serving United States secretary of Transportation. Duffy has additionally served as the acting administrator of NASA since 2025 replacing Janet Petro.
China continually advances its space research program, marked by a number of space missions, including the completion of its Tiangong space station. The country marks another stride in space exploration with ambitious lunar and mars exploration programs like Chang'e lunar missions and Tianwen interplanetary missions aim to rival the United States.
The restrictions imposed by NASA will affect direct research projects and partnerships with institutions that receive NASA’s funding. Moreover, it also leads to disruptions in climate research, earth observation, and other disciplines, which will reduce the pace of scientific progress.
Chinese Embassy in Washington described the NASA decision as ‘discriminatory.’
Liu Pengyu, Chinese embassy spokesperson, said, “China has consistently and firmly opposed the US’s generalisation of the concept of national security. Science and Technology issues should not be politicised.”
NASA is a independent agency of the US federal government responsible for the United States’s civil space program, aeronautics research, and space research. It was established in 1958 succeeding the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) to give the American space development effort a distinct civil orientation focusing on peaceful applications in space science.
