Missing councillors, alliance talks and race for power: Is this just mayoral election, or Punjab's 1st political test before 2027?

Neeraj Bali
Chandigarh, June 8 (UNI): With mayoral elections scheduled across eight municipal corporations in Punjab on Tuesday, the exercise has evolved into much more than a routine civic process. The outcome will provide the first major political assessment of how parties stand in urban Punjab after the municipal elections and could offer early clues about their strategy ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
The numbers underline why the elections are politically significant. Of the eight municipal corporations going to mayoral polls, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) enjoys a clear majority in five corporations. Mohali, Bathinda, Batala, Moga and Barnala. The BJP has secured a majority in Abohar, while Congress holds the advantage in Kapurthala. Pathankot remains the only corporation where no party has crossed the majority mark, making it the most closely watched contest.
