Microsoft puts Pak IT sector in uncertainty

Microsoft puts Pak IT sector in uncertainty

New Delhi, July 5 (UNI) In a shocking event for Pakistan’s IT corridors, Microsoft shuts down its 25-year-long operations in Pakistan. The tech major started its Pak operations in 2000, which began with ambitions of digital transformation and tech-friendly collaboration.

The news came just after Microsoft's announcement of layoffs of its 9,000 employees this week.

Microsoft played a major role in developing the Pak IT sector in these 25 years by implementing enterprise solutions across diverse industries, collaborating with the government on different e-governance projects, and overseeing the capacity-building programme for the country.
Microsoft made a quiet move, and the announcement came from Jawwad Rehman (founding country manager of Microsoft Pakistan) in his LinkedIn post.
Rehman played a critical role in establishing Microsoft's presence in Pakistan. He also highlighted the challenges faced by businesses dealing with the current situation in Pakistan.
The Microsoft move came amid Pakistan's facing a severe economic situation. In a post on X, former president Dr. Arif Alvi expressed his disappointment over Microsoft's decision regarding the closure of operations. He also showed his concerns over the bleak economic future of Pakistan.
On the other hand, Microsoft has not yet released any formal statement on the closure of operations in Pakistan. The immediate decision is linked with the adaptation strategies and innovative measures followed by the tech major.
