The middle order — that unreliable cousin who promises much and delivers little — has flattered to deceive. Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya have all knocked on the door without quite entering the room. Suryakumar, with an average of 43 at this venue, carries memory as his ally, but memory does not score runs; batsmen do. In the last outing, Naman Dhir and Sherfane Rutherford played cameos of such brevity and brilliance that they felt like poetry — delightful, but insufficient.
