Metal icon Devin Townsend announces long break from touring

Ottawa, Apr 29 (UNI) Musical maestro Devin Townsend has announced a break from touring, after the Canadian guitarist-vocalist finishes his North American Tour, making it clear that he’ll be absent from the stage “for the foreseeable future”.
The metal veteran, known for his work in the extreme metal scene with the iconic group -Strapping Young Lad - and a highly successful solo career in the progressive metal world, broke the news on his YouTube channel, in a video titled ‘Going on a loooooong vacation'. The singer announced his fatigue from touring, thanked his audience, and said that the tour “will be the last you see of me, for quite some time.”
In the disclaimer of the video, the ‘Deadhead’ singer wrote: “For nearly 35 years, I’ve followed a creative path guided by instinct—each album, each tour, each project a new chapter in a story I’ve felt compelled to tell. My mind latches onto concepts, and I love chasing them down. That chase has made this journey wild, unpredictable, and deeply fulfilling.
“Over the years, I’ve heard it countless times: ‘Dev, take a break… please.’ But the flood of ideas, the excitement, and the support of incredible musicians and listeners have kept me going, kept me touring, and kept me grateful for a life on the road.”
“That said,” he added, “things have changed—especially since the pandemic. Booking tours now means planning up to two years in advance. With fewer venues, fewer crews, and a saturated touring circuit, it’s become more challenging than ever to line things up.
“And beyond the logistics, life has simply caught up with me: my parents need help, my dogs are on their last legs, the kids have moved out, ‘The Moth’ (his highly ambitious rock opera) is nearly complete, and truthfully, I need some time to breathe and recalibrate.
“So I’ve made the decision to take a break from touring—an indefinite one. This upcoming North American run will be the last time you’ll see me on stage for the foreseeable future.”
The ‘Stormbending’ singer-guitarist, is known for his highly unconventional vocals and amazing guitar skills. On the vocal front, Townsend is able to seamlessly mix harsh vocals, with a very grandiose high pitched singing, or employ a deeper and lower register.
During his years in Strapping Young Lad, his vocals featured an even crazier style, where he would often mix guttural growls with very high pitched singing, almost sounding like a possessed person.
His guitar skills were more conventional in the extreme metal band, laying a deeper emphasis on heaviness and brutality, though also employing unusual textures.
On his solo front however, Townsend broke all barriers and decided to radically experiment on all fronts, mixing, pop, metal, prog rock, jazz, experimental, fusion, arena rock, rock n roll, hard rock, hardcore punk, punk rock, industrial, folk, classical, and several other styles.
Most recently, the metal veteran and icon, released his latest solo album ‘PowerNerd’, which featured a more streamlined and direct approach to songwriting, instead of his usual eclectic style.
Townsend announced that he'll shortly be launching ‘The Ruby Quaker Show’, a YouTube series that'll explore dozens of creative projects he's had "on the back burner."
