Mercedes-Benz to manufacture GLS Maybach at its Pune plant

Mumbai, Jan 16 (UNI) Mercedes-Benz has begun to ramp up its manufacturing presence in Pune to produce the ultra-luxury SUV GLS Maybach, an electric vehicle (EV) variant and a combustion engine model, according to a top company official.
Mercedes India's Managing Director & CEO Santosh Iyer said that India will be the only country to manufacture the GLS Maybach outside the United States. The localisation efforts are expected to reduce the vehicle's price by approximately Rs 40 lakh, bringing it down to nearly Rs 2.75 crore. Iyer did not provide details about the planned investment at the Chakan plant in Pune.
Due to local manufacturing, the prices of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS will now start at Rs 2.75 crore (ex-showroom). This is a significant reduction of around Rs 40 lakh in its prices. The decision from the automaker comes on the back of the fact that India is now among the top five global markets for Mercedes-Maybach for the first time, according to a company official.
Mercedes-Benz India also revealed that it sold 19,007 vehicles in 2025, which it described as its most successful year for revenue, even though there was a 3 percent decrease in total unit sales compared to 19,565 vehicles sold in 2024.
The luxury vehicle segment, which includes models such as the S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach, and AMG, experienced an 11 pc growth year-over-year and represented 25 pc of overall sales. The AMG performance lineup experienced a significant growth of 34 pc, fueled by the popularity of models like the AMG G63, AMG CLE53, and AMG GLC43.
Mercedes-Benz India plans an aggressive product strategy for 2026, unveiling 12 new vehicles, including new models, facelifts, and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with a focus on top-end segments. The company will also bolster its retail network by adding 15 new luxury touchpoints and upgrading existing ones.
