Mehbooba urges Shah, states to ensure safety of Kashmiri students

Srinagar, Apr 29 (UNI) Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers of all states to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students studying outside the Union Territory amid rising tensions.
Mehbooba said she has been receiving “distressed calls” from students across the country who are living in fear due to the prevailing situation. She said that while some educational institutions have postponed exams and advised students to return home until normalcy is restored, others have opted to continue classes.
“Urge @AmitShah and Chief Ministers of all states to intervene and ensure the safety of all students until they can safely return home,” she said in a post on X. “Additionally, a strong message must be sent to those spreading communal hate on social media. Such divisive forces must be identified and dealt with firmly to maintain peace and harmony.”

After the Pahalgam carnage that left 26 civilians dead last week, there have been several instances where Kashmiri students studying outside UT have been harassed and even threatened by right-wing groups. The wave of threats has worried their parents, many of whom are asking their wards to return home.
