Marandi questions Jharkhand govt's DGP appointment process

Ranchi, Jan 16 (UNI ) Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi on Friday raised serious objections to the state government’s process of appointing the Director General of Police (DGP), alleging that the procedure violated Supreme Court directions as well as the state’s own rules.
In a post on social media platform X, Marandi stated that the state government amended the DGP appointment rules citing Supreme Court guidelines and argued that appointing an experienced police chief was mandatory. The government, he said, claimed that several senior IPS officers were unavailable for selection as they were on Central deputation.
Terming this justification misleading, Marandi said the Home Department’s claim of non-availability of senior officers was factually incorrect. He pointed out that three senior Jharkhand cadre IPS officers of DGP rank -- Anil Palta, Prashant Singh and MS Bhatia -- were not on Central deputation and had remaining service tenures of one year, two years and three years respectively. Despite this, he alleged, a junior officer in the seniority list was appointed DGP just a day before retirement.
