Manipur Police to intensify crackdown on extortionists

Imphal, Oct 12 (UNI) Manipur Police has decided to stop illegal extortion and kidnapping in the state.
K Jayanta, IG (Administration), said various persons have started organised gangs to extort money. K Kabib, IG Intelligence, addressing the media here on Saturday, said after the crisis started on May 3, 2023, in Manipur cases of extortion, kidnapping, and threats have increased. Cases of extortion on highways, market areas, and educational institutes have also increased, he said. The economy has been affected, and an anti-extortion cell headed by an Addl DG (LO) has been formed. Fifteen crack teams have been formed to curtail extortion, and 121 extortionists have been arrested during the last year.
For highway security, 16 companies have been requisitioned, and frisking and checking have been increased. Meanwhile, Manipur Police arrested two active members of a Manipur-based militant organisation. Police also ensured movement of 46 and 272 nos. of vehicles carrying essential items along NH-37 and NH-2, respectively.
