Manipur officials want more banks , assure land for financial activities

Imphal, May 16 (UNI) The 82nd State Level Bankers Committee for Manipur was held on Friday under the chairmanship of the state Chief Secretary, PK Singh.
Recognising the importance and necessity to revive the economy of the State in the prevailing circumstances, the meeting was, for the first time, attended (virtually) by Nagaraju Maddirala, Secretary, Department of Financial Services (DFS), Government of India. Vinay M Tonse, MD, State Bank of India (SBI), and Ashok Chandra, MD, Punjab National Bank (PNB), also attended virtually, in addition to other regional bank heads.
The Chief Secretary highlighted some of the issues relating to the banking sector which are prevalent in the State. He emphasized the need to open bank branches in all the unbanked Blocks, which have far-reaching consequences, especially in the implementation of Government Schemes.
Other issues brought to the attention of the banking fraternity included the need for providing insurance for sectors like transportation of cargo, building infrastructure, providing loans to Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Start-ups, and the need to hand-hold prospective loanees.
As self-employment is very crucial in the overall upliftment of the economy, Rural Self-Employment Training Institutes (RSETI) play a very important role. The MDs of both SBI and PNB, in turn, assured that RSETIs in the remaining approved districts would be made functional in three months. Further, all steps would be taken by the banking sector to make Manipur a model State in the implementation of Government Schemes in the whole of North East.
The Secretary, DFS gave strict directions to all the senior bank officials to extend all possible help in terms of opening of banks in the unbanked Blocks, setting up of RSETIs and implementation of Government Schemes like PMVISHWAKARMA, PMEGP, PMFME, PMSURYAGHAR, PM MUDRA YOJANA, NULM, and NRLM.
