Malaysia vital for India's vision of MAHASAGAR and Act East Policy: PM

Rio de Janeiro/ New Delhi, July 7 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met his Malaysian counterpart Anwar bin Ibrahim on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit here and thanked him for his strong condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack and emphasized that Malaysia plays a vital role in India's Vision MAHASAGAR and Act East Policy.
"It was a very good meeting with Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mr. Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Brazil. Malaysia is vital for India, having a key place in our Vision MAHASAGAR and Act East Policy," PM Modi wrote on X.
PM Modi introduced India's new vision for the Global South, called "Mahasagar" or "Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions" in March 2025.
PM Modi and PM Ibrahim reviewed the progress in India-Malaysia relations since the latter's state visit to India in August 2024, with particular focus on trade and investment, defence, education, healthcare, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
We reviewed the ground covered in our bilateral relations, including the progress made since PM Ibrahim’s visit to India last year. Futuristic sectors like IT, renewable energy and infrastructure are those where bilateral ties are growing strongly. Also discussed how to improve investment and trade relations between our nations.
BRICS countries today condemned in ‘’strongest terms’’ the Pahalgam terrorist attack and reaffirmed commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations including cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing and safe havens.
BRICS countries, in a Joint Declaration at the conclusion of their seventeenth Summit at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, called for ensuring zero tolerance for terrorism and also rejected the double standards in countering the scourge.
PM Modi also congratulated Malaysian PM for the successful completion of the review of the ASEAN-India FTA The two leaders also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the multilateral arena and regional security."Prime Minister congratulated Malaysia for its successful stewardship of ASEAN and welcomed its continued support for a strengthened ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including the early and successful completion of the review of the ASEAN-India FTA, the Prime Minister Office said in a statement.
The prime minister arrived in Brazil last night on the fourth leg of his five-nation tour. He has already visited Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina.
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE, with Indonesia joining in 2025.Earlier, PM Modi, along with other leaders, participated in the traditional family photo session at the Museum of Modern Art in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. The photo showed Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, PM Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, along with leaders and representatives of other member countries.
