Maha nurses warn of statewide strike over pay, contracts

Mumbai, July 16 (UNI) The Maharashtra State Nurses Association has declared plans for an indefinite statewide strike commencing July 18 unless the government addresses their critical demands of pay parity and contractual hiring practices.
The association, representing over 30,000 nurses, will initiate protests at Azad Maidan starting July 16, escalating to a one-day strike on July 17. Failure to resolve grievances by July 18 will trigger an open-ended work stoppage across all government hospitals.
Central to the dispute is the state's continued recruitment of nurses on contractual terms rather than filling permanent vacancies. "Fifty percent of nursing positions in government hospitals remain unfilled, forcing unsustainable workloads on existing staff," stated Sumitra Tote, General Secretary of the association. "The union explicitly rejects temporary contracts as a solution to staffing shortages," she added.
