Lunglei authorities to tighten control on refugee movement from Myanmar

Aizawl, Apr 18 (UNI) The district administration of Lunglei in southern Mizoram is set to implement tighter measures to regulate the movement of refugees from Myanmar currently residing in various relief camps across the district, district Superintendent of Police Jerome Lalmuankima said on Thursday.
Speaking during a visit to the Ṭhaizawl relief camp near Lunglei town, Lalmuankima announced that Liaison officers will be appointed from both the district police and local civil society organisations. These officers will be tasked with monitoring and controlling the movement of refugees in and out of the camps. “The liaison officers will work in coordination with camp leaders to maintain registers documenting refugee movements,” he said.
In a telephonic conversation on Friday, the SP added that all Chinese-manufactured Kenbo125 motorcycles found in the camps would be banned from use. To prevent their operation, police will remove the front tyres of these bikes and keep them in custody. “These vehicles were smuggled into Mizoram and are not registered under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, rendering them illegal,” he noted.
