Louis Tomlinson remembers Liam Payne with profound emotion

London, Oct 8 (UNI) Former One Direction vocalist Louis Tomlinson opened up about the immense grief he continues to carry after the tragic death of his former bandmate Liam Payne, while honouring the late singer's lasting impact on One Direction's journey.
Payne's untimely passing in Argentina in October 2024, following a tragic fall from a hotel balcony, left an indelible void in the hearts and his former bandmates. For Tomlinson, the loss cast a long shadow over the band's 15th anniversary celebrations earlier this year, the first without Payne's presence, reports Rolling Stone.
On previous 1D anniversaries, Tomlinson says he almost felt a bit “sick of nostalgia”, but this time, it hit different. “You know, there’s still a level in my head (where it feels) unjust and frustrating that he’s not with us anymore. So, it just brought up those feelings, although I’m still living with them anyway.”
“It was really, really, impossibly difficult for me to deal with losing Liam,” he added. “Naively, I thought that because at this point, I’m relatively well versed in grief for my age, that it might soften the blow. (That was) super-naive. It’s very different. I’ve never lost a friend before.”
Tomlinson remembered Payne as the band's steadfast anchor, the “safest pair of hands” during their formative years. While the rest of them were still finding their footing, Payne's experience, technical brilliance and calm maturity gave the young band its structure and direction.
“None of us would have admitted it at the time, because you have a lot of pride as a young lad, but we all looked up to him like that,” he recalled.
After Payne's passing, Tomlinson felt an obligation to restore his friend's reputation, countering the media's often harsh portrayal. He praised Payne's artistry, his perfect pitch, his lyrical instinct and his magnetic stage presence, asserting that he was an essential creative pillar of 1D.
Reflecting further, Tomlinson emphasised that Payne was often misjudged by the public. “Anything that he got wrong in life, Liam – which, by the way, we all do daily – it was never through malice. It was only through miscommunication – him just not being able to express himself in the way he needed to.”
“He was just a very misunderstood person, I think, from a public perspective,” said Tomlinson. “If there is ever any judgment on his character, I think nine times out of 10, you can reflect on that, and the reflection is that he was someone who just wanted to be liked,” he summed up the interview.
