Longtime drummer of ‘90s rock giant Pearl Jam, Matt Cameron, announces departure after 27-years

Seattle, July 9 (UNI) In a surprising turn of events for fans, American rock giant Pearl Jam's long-time drummer Matt Cameron has announced his departure from the band after a remarkable 27-year tenure, leaving many to speculate about his replacement, reports Loudwire.

Cameron, who initially joined in 1998 following Jack Irons' exit, became a permanent member of the rock group and a significant contributor to their songwriting process. The band’s 2024 release, ‘Dark Matter’, was his last studio album with the group, and he shared the stage with them one final time in May this year.

Cameron shared the news on social media on July 7, with the band acknowledging his significant contributions and wishing him well for his future endeavours. This development has immediately led to speculation about who might fill the void, with eyes turning to Dave Krusen, Pearl Jam's original drummer.

Krusen, who drummed on their seminal 1991 debut album, ‘Ten’, before Dave Abbruzzese took over, has a well-documented history with the Seattle-based group. He notably reunited with the band for their 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and again in 2022 when Cameron was sidelined by COVID-19.

Appearing on Audacy's The Daly Migs Show yesterday, Krusen addressed the possibility of rejoining: "I got a message yesterday morning and I didn't know what was going on," Krusen said. "People are hitting me up and I'm like, 'I have no idea what the band's up to.' I'm very surprised to hear that from Matt, but I'm excited for him and his new adventures, whatever he's got planned."

While Cameron's post offered no specific reason for his departure, he did tease "more to follow."
Pearl Jam has yet to hint at a replacement. However, Krusen expressed his eagerness: "Of course I would love to jam with those guys again, anytime, they know that. The (Rock and Roll) Hall of Fame thing was amazing and then sitting in with them, it was like no time had passed. It's just effortless getting to play with those guys so, of course, I would love to." Krusen also recalled past discussions about recording together for fun, though nothing ever materialised.

Pearl Jam's influence on rock music, particularly as pioneers of the grunge scene, cannot be overstated. Alongside bands like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden, they defined the sound of the 90s, bringing back rawness and strong emotions to an increasingly polished American rock scene.

While Nirvana was a mix of punk, metal, and 60s-style rock, and Soundgarden and Alice In Chains leaned into heavy metal, Pearl Jam, in contrast, is a blend of hard rock and classic rock in the style of 60s and early 70s rock 'n' roll icons like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Who, Jethro Tull, and The Doors, all delivered with a rawer sound.
