Local products found many takers in GI Products' expo in Varanasi

Varanasi, Jan 22 (UNI) The Geographical Indication (GI) exhibition in Varanasi turned out to be a useful platform for the local products in a big way.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's continuing emphasis on the promotion of local artisans has been paying rich dividends as was evident in the Mati Kala Mela in Lucknow on the Diwali.
With the sale of about Rs 25 lakh in just four days at GI Products exhibition even amidst a pandemic, the craftsmen have set an ideal example of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
Organised in collaboration with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), stalls of 50 GI products from 16 districts were displayed at the Deendayal Handicrafts Complex and seminars along with training programs from experts took place which focused on improving the technical skills of the craftsmen. CM Yogi also encouraged the distribution of free tool kits to ensure that the artisans abide by the pledge of 'Vocal for Local' and 'Vocal for Global'.
The exhibition displayed both GI products from the state along with the products in the process of getting GI tags . There were stalls from Varanasi, Bhadohi, Chandauli, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Azamgarh, Bulandshahr, Farukhabad, Firozabad, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Kannauj, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Saharanpur and Siddharthanagar.
A total of 28 unique Geographical Indication products were also displayed, 7 of which were from Varanasi. Through this, the Yogi government also provided physical and virtual platforms for buyers and sellers to communicate resulting in effective business.
Few highlights of the exhibition were products like Terracotta of Gorakhpur, Brocade, Sarees and wooden toys of Varanasi, Black Pottery of Azamgarh, Hand made Carpet of Bhadohi, Perfume of Kannauj, Metal Craft of Moradabad, Pottery of Khurja and Kala Namak Rice of Siddharthnagar which had already been given the GI tags.
Buyers who attended the exhibition in large numbers applauded the efforts of the Uttar Pradesh Government behind making a wide range of genuine and authentic handmade products available in a single exhibition.
Bihari Lal Agarwal, a manufacturer of wooden toys, said, “by coming to this exhibition, people from other business fields are also making up their mind to export our product.” Pratish Kumar of Firozabad, stated that the sale of ODOP Products has been excellent. Moreover, the sale of sugar free and organic kala namak rice of Siddharth Nagar was so overwhelming that it had to be restocked.
Deputy Commissioner Industries, Virendra Kumar informed here on Friday that due to the provision of technical upgradation training program by the government for GI products, 240 craftsmen were trained. Also, 600 got soft skill training and 270 craftsmen were imparted new technology training. A total of 2000 craftsmen were given advanced tool kits during the program which played a vital role in accelerating the sale of their products and also gave them new opportunities.
Handloom tool kits were also provided to 300 beneficiaries under the Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana and 300 under the ODOP Training Scheme. Along with this, cheques were distributed to two beneficiaries of each scheme under PMEGP, ODOP Margin Money Loan Scheme.
GI specialist Padma Shri Rajinikanth said, “The unique products of Uttar Pradesh are going global from local. Such a huge exhibition of GI Products has never happened before. Through this, Handloom, Handicrafts and all the ODOP products will certainly get benefits even internationally.”
