Left demands probe into nationwide flight chaos, urges strict airfare regulation

New Delhi, The Left parties - CPI and CPI (M) - have called for an independent inquiry, by the Supreme Court or a Joint Parliamentary Committee into the nationwide air travel crisis which saw thousands of flights cancelled, many more delayed and disrupted travel plans of tens of thousands of citizens on Monday.
Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Sandosh Kumar, in a letter to Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, also urged action to control rising domestic airfares and protect passengers.
The letter comes in the wake of Kumar’s question in the Rajya Sabha on July 24, 2023, regarding the ‘Rise in Airfares’. At that time, the Ministry had maintained that airfares are market-driven and are neither regulated nor established by the government, adding that there was no proposal to alter the existing regulatory framework.
