Kerala urges centre to relax caste certificate rules

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 7 (UNI) The Kerala government will intensify its efforts to persuade the union government to revise the norms related to issuing caste certificates for Tamil-speaking minority communities that migrated to the state decades ago, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told State Assembly today.
Replying to a submission by A. Raja, the Chief Minister stated that, as per the existing rules, caste certificates are issued only to Tamil-speaking minority groups who migrated to Kerala and permanently settled there before 1950.
He noted that the Nadvattom Gopalakrishnan Committee had recommended extending this cut-off year to January 1, 1970. However, as no authentic records are available regarding migration and permanent residence within the erstwhile Travancore, Cochin, and Madras Presidency regions before 1950, a detailed examination would be required before amending the rules.
