Kerala Cabinet announces major welfare measures in first meeting: Free KSRTC travel for women from June 15

Thiruvananthapuram, May 18 (UNI) The first Cabinet meeting of the newly sworn-in Kerala government led by Chief Minister VD Satheesan approved a series of sweeping welfare measures on Monday, including free bus travel for women in KSRTC buses from June 15, the creation of a dedicated department for senior citizens, and salary hikes for ASHA and Anganwadi workers.
The decisions, announced within hours of the new government assuming office, are being viewed as a decisive attempt by the UDF administration to begin implementing key promises made under its widely publicised “Indira Guarantee” campaign during the Assembly elections.
The Cabinet approved free travel for women in Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses from June 15, making Kerala the latest southern state after Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to roll out the ambitious women-centric mobility scheme. Departments concerned have been instructed to complete all preparatory work before the launch date.
