Karnataka ESCOMs seek power tariff hike after ₹4,900 crore loss

Bengaluru, Jan 16 (UNI) Karnataka's electricity supply companies (ESCOMs) have reported a combined revenue loss of nearly ₹4,900 crore for the financial year 2024-25, prompting them to seek permission from the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) for a power tariff revision from April.
According to the ESCOMs' annual performance reports submitted to KERC, the losses were significantly higher than earlier estimates, raising concerns over the financial stability of power distribution in the state. Among all utilities, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) reported the highest loss of ₹2,802 crore, followed by HESCOM with ₹604 crore, MESCOM ₹480 crore, CESC ₹528 crore, and GESCOM ₹457 crore.
The companies have proposed increasing tariffs for industrial and commercial consumers, who pay bills directly, while reducing rates for agricultural pump sets, which are subsidised by the state government under existing schemes, including Gruha Jyothi, which covers electricity consumption up to 200 units for domestic users. ESCOM officials said the move would ease operational and maintenance challenges while reducing the subsidy burden on the government.
