Karnataka Brahmins alarmed over missing "General" category

Bengaluru, Oct 8 (UNI) The Brahmin community in Karnataka has raised serious concerns over the ongoing caste census conducted by the State Backwards Classes Commission, highlighting the omission of a "General Brahmin" category in the survey. The exclusion has forced members of the community to register under the "Others" category, creating confusion over official records and potential future entitlements.
Under existing Revenue Department records, caste certificates for Brahmins clearly list them as "General Brahmin." However, the current census application provides only three options: Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and "Others." This discrepancy has prompted questions about whether individuals recorded under "Others" will have their official certificates reflect their traditional designation and whether this could impact access to rights, education, and employment opportunities.
The issue was first flagged in Dharwad district by Mahesh Joshi, former president of Hebballi Gram Panchayat. Joshi claimed that when enumerators advised the community to list themselves under "Others," it only heightened frustration. "If we are entered under 'Others,' why should the Revenue Department issue caste certificates stating 'General Brahmin'? This inconsistency could create long-term complications for children's education, employment opportunities, and legal entitlements," he said.
