Karnataka: 25 held for Channagiri police station attack

Bengaluru, May 27 (UNI) Twenty-five people have been arrested in connection to a violent mob attack on the Channagiri police station in Davangere district, police confirmed on Monday.
The attack, which took place early Saturday, led to significant damage to the police station including several of its vehicles. At least 11 police personnel were injured in the attack sparked by public outrage over an alleged custodial death.
The deceased, Adil (30), was detained on May 24 for alleged involvement in gambling.
Police stated that Adil's health deteriorated rapidly upon arrival at the station, leading to his death. Following this, a large group, including his relatives, launched an assault on the police station, damaging property and hurling stones.
Davangere Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth announced that the body would be handed over to Adil's family after postmortem.
The police have denied that Adil's death occurred due to custodial actions, citing his history of epileptic seizures.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been tasked with investigating the case.
The 25 arrests have been made under IPC sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty) and 307 (attempt to murder). The suspects have been remanded to judicial custody. Five police teams have been formed to further investigate, relying on CCTV footage and video clips for evidence.
Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara acknowledged police negligence and announced the suspension of the Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Channagiri police station inspector.
An inquiry has been ordered to determine the circumstances of Adil's death and the police's handling of the situation.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasised that the death was not a result of custodial violence. He denounced the police for detaining Adil without filing an FIR and for not releasing him promptly after inquiry.
The state government has assured a thorough investigation and accountability for any misconduct by police officials involved in the incident.
